I was just diagnosed with Celiac's Sprue. This is a disease in which one's small intestine(i.e. my small intestine) has a toxic reaction to one of the components of gluten, which is found in many grains, including wheat, barly and oats. Apparently eating these products, even in tiny amounts, can cause severe damage to my digestive tract which can lead to all sorts of horrible problems down the road, as well as the chronic stomach pains and discharges that I've been experiencing now.
The thing I find most upsetting about this diagnosis, though, is not the diagnosis itself (I had suspected this might be the case years ago) but how I got the diagnosis. Earlier today I went to see a doctor to get some tests done for athesma. I had seen this doctor once, 4 years ago, when I had gotten a test for celiac's disease, and had not gotten a result from them, and assumed that it came back negative. Well, today I got those results. Four years later, I get my positive results for Celiac Sprue. Four years more of damaging my small intestine and putting myself at risk for various cancers, diabites, etc. and probably living with vitamin difficiencies that could have been avoided had they picked up the phone and called.
Sorry for the rant, but I'm pissed. And apparently can't eat bread. |

| Reading List |
[Mar. 27th, 2009|04:06 pm] |
So I am starting the MUP program in the fall at the university of Michigan. My acceptance came with a summer reading list. It was of the sort where it is obvious they don't expect anyone to complete all the books, let alone be able to find them. There are, like, 30 books on the list covering a vast array of subject matter. However, being broke as I am, I think my summer is going to consist largely of reading these books. And hopefully some travel.
There are a few books on the list I've already read (see: Jane Jacobs' The Death and Life of Great American Cities and Guns, Germs and Steel
The others, so far, are going according to what they have at the ann arbor district library. I am very excited, though, to start reading. Today I checked out "The City in History," "Redevelopment and Race," and "The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit." |

| drunk at work |
[Mar. 26th, 2008|03:58 pm] |
is not uncommon here. There was a birthday party here during lunch. In which we shot wine. Yes, they do wine shots here. Big shots. And the wine is house wine. Which is stronger. So I am drunk. At work. Thank god no one expects me to be productive.
In other news, I had a meeting with one of the student councils today. I might be helping to strengthen a youth newspaper, or starting a youth volunteer group.
And I'm going to poland next week. Via romania, and on the way back, ukraine.
yay travel.
yay wine. |

Just back to site from Chisinau. This weekend was all COD (Community and Organizational Development) volunteers conference, and it was quite helpful, although overwhelming! The 3 hour bus ride each way doesn't help, nor did my site mate getting sick.
Monday is as monday is, though, and work was actually productive for once. I had my leadership development club at the residential school (something like an orphanage), which went well, but I need to get more organized about it. Writing goals and objectives and stuff.
Now I need to identify an edible substance for dinner. |

Hey Everyone (or anyone?)
It has been AGES since I used this journal for anything. However. Lately I have gotten many requests for more updates, etc. about my experiences in Peace Corps in Moldova, and I was thinking about bringing this back to life in order to make my life accessible to the general internet public. So my question is, does anyone here read this, and if so, do you have interest in reading what I have to say about my experiences?
I won't be hurt if you say "no." I understand that many people don't want their friends page cluttered up with travelogues, etc. (although I'm not technically "traveling" as I am actually living here.)
Anyway, let me know! Also, if I haven't heard from you in a while, say hi! |

| general appeal for computer help |
[Dec. 10th, 2007|05:50 pm] |
Hi Everyone:
My laptop died. It will not be rescued. I don't want to go into details, but there is just no way. Hence, I need a new machine. As you know, I am in Peace Corps, and I am broke. I plan on getting a PC and installing an open source operating system and software, however, I know little about this or what price range I'm looking at here. I have found some models that seem reasonable online for the $650 range, but I don't know what I'm missing. Its been long enough since I've thought about these things, that I really wouldn't know where to begin. Any advice would be helpful. |

[Nov. 26th, 2007|07:55 pm] |
This post was supposed to be a long update on my arrival at my worksite and my experiences in Moldova so far. But I can't get online using the national dial-up service, and when I try to open the file here at the internet cafe, all that comes up are a bunch of warnings in Russian.
On days like this, I want to teleport to my bed. Or better yet, to a cup of steaming coffee and a scrabble set with friends around it.
hope all is well in the land of no russian error messages. |

| [ | mood |
| | anxious | ] | So I'm leaving DC in about 3 weeks. In the meantime, I have a shit ton of stuff to do. This is to be divided into the stuff I "need" to do, and the stuff I "should" do.
As follows:
Need: -Finish house sitting -pare down my stuff (big time) -donate all my yarn/fiber -go to florida (got my ticket today) -hold a goodbye party or something -cancel netflix -close bank account -finish russian class -sell my furnature (anyone want a mattress/sheets/dresser/etc?) -get the bulk trash stuff taken away -buy ticket home -pack
Should: -set GRE date/study for GRE -finish ye-olde t-shirt project -finish up some knitting projects -read up material sitting around -go to moldovan embassy -clean out food shelf (should this be in "need"?)
hmm...I'm sure there's more, but that's it for now. |
